4-0 out of 5 stars The best bang for your bucks!, March 24, 2005
I've been using this Sony for recording church services for a couple years now. Obviously, this is not a high-tech operation. I convert the tape into digital format for editing on my PC to create CD's. I've been able to make some great tapes so far and I'm recording in a huge "cathedral" type church. For the size and cost, I think it's great. I don't think I'd use it for listening to music as the microphone is rather "noisey". I recommend this for persons who aren't ready to make a major investment in high-tech recording equipment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pay a little bit more for important features, February 5, 2005
The Sony TCM-150 is about the cheapest cassette recorder on the market at this time. For five to ten bucks more you get voice activation, an external microphone jack, a tape counter, and extended play/record. The models with these features are the Sony TCM-200DV (without the tape counter) and the Panasonic RQ-L31. Of course, in all these cases, you're getting a cheaply made recorder intended for lectures, notes and inteviews. If you want something for music or that's built to take some punishment you'll have to pay more.

Last word on the 150: The odds are you're going to need at least one of those extra features - especially voice activation. Pass on this one and pay just a tiny bit more for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recorder, June 28, 2006
This is a terrific tape recorder.

I've always found that bells and whistles like voice activation don't work. This one does. You want it on, you turn it on. You want it off, you turn it off. It's recording quality is very good for this medium. We're not talking digital sound, of course, but no magnetic tape machine will deliver that quality.

I've used probably a dozen recorders over many years, and this is one of the best values out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for books on tape, March 2, 2008
My new car doesn't have a cassette player, not even an option, so I decided to try a portable cassette player and see how cumbersome it would be. It's great! This little Sony T150 stores in my center console, has loud volume if I need to hear it heavy traffic, and it's clear as a bell. Now I carry it back and forth to house and car - just easier than my plug in boom box. the 2 batteries are supposed to last for 26 hours but actually lasted 34 hours in play mode. Am very happy with this Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PRODUCT AGAIN, FROM SONY., June 8, 2007
I WANTED A NOT TO EXPENSIVE CASSETTE RECORDER. I WANTED A BRAND NAME. I SAW THE SONY RECORDER FOR A GOOD PRICE,AND I FOUND IT. RECEIVED PRODUCT VERY QUICKLY. RECORDS FULL LENGTH CASSETTES. EASY OPERATION. PLAY, RECORD, STOP, REWIND AND FAST FORWARD. LARGE SPEAKER, WHICH IS IN THE FRONT, WITH THE CASSETTE WINDOW DISPLAY. THIS HELPS ALOT. SOME CASSETTE RECORDERS HAVE WINDOW ON ONE SIDE, WITH THE SPEAKER ON THE OTHER. WITH THIS RECORDER, YOU CAN LISTEN AND RECORD WITH THE PLAYER ON IT'S BACK. YOU ONLY HAVE TO USE THEBACK SIDE TO CHANGE BATTERIES. RECORDS CLEAR VOICE. PLAYBACK FINE. THANK YOU

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, June 2, 2005
Not bad for its price: this recorder works fine and has no annoying drawbacks. Just don't drop yours--I just did and that was enough to break it. My only complaint about its design is that it lacks a clip and, as dorky as these are, if you are walking around the house or doing any other hands-free mobile activity while listening, then you have to find some way to affix the recorder to your body without the clip.

1-0 out of 5 stars Works well but................, September 22, 2006
I am quite disappointed with this sony product. It works well but the big drawback is that you hear the motor rumble in your recordings. I wonder if other buyers have this problem or did I get a poor model? Buy cheap and get cheap I should know better.

    5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, August 30, 2005
I use this recorder for my voice lessons, and chorus practice. It has been grest. I love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not too good, February 19, 2007
This product does what it sets out to do, record. How well it does that is a whole nother story. In a lecture hall you have to make sure to sit at or near the front of the hall, otherwise you can barely hear the speaker over the room noise and the noise of the recorder. The recorder itself makes a good amount of noise when recording and when playing back. And when the machine gets cold or has been used a bit, it likes to make a high pitched squel that is very disruptive in lectures. Not the best choice ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recorder for Voice, December 4, 2007
I own three of these units. The two speed model is similar. They are excellent. AUDIO Tape is a better medium for live recodings as the digital recorders I have used ALL DISTORT on loud passages. This recorder has AGC (auto level recording) which is great for voice recording of classes etc or for recording family history (interview your parents) etc. Be sure to use a decent grade audio tape with this. I recomment the Fugi 90 minute normal bias tapes. Maxell tape has more noise and is prone to defects. Also use fresh (Alkaline) batteries and change them after every two or three tapes. And use a Q tip and alcohol to clean the heads after 10 tapes. This will insure good quality recordings. One a tape recording has been made you can transfer this onto CD if desired. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Journalist's Ideal Tool, April 8, 2007
This is pretty much the perfect tape recorder for interviews, whether live or phone -- sturdy but light for carrying, with plenty of bells and whistles but a snap to learn to use. (However, inserting tapes is slightly harder than in some other machines.) You can choose slow-speed recording to double the length of your tape (e.g., get two hours of talk on a 60-minute tape), which minimizes interrupting the flow of the interview to change sides or tapes. On playback, a speed-control dial lets you control speed and tone of speech -- you can slow down a fast jabberer to transcribe, or speed up to chipmonk-voices past the less useful chatter without missing anything. Plugging in the adapter spares the batteries when transcribing, i.e. when hitting the "pause" button instead of "stop" for interruptions that last longer than anticipated. Sound quality is fine for talk. Not much machine-hiss, and even less on slow speed than on regular speed. Much easier to change batteries than on my previous tape recorder(another Sony which finally died after 25 years of service). Haven't tried this machine for music.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A fine product.....but,....., July 10, 2006
the 210DV is just the 200 DV with a power adapter and cassette tape included in the package. The power adapter is an additional $14.99 if sold separately, and the cassette costs maybe 50 cents, but if you want to save some money and can make use of the power adapter, this is a great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Functions, January 4, 2007
This cassette recorder has great sound quality and easy functions. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs to record speeches, or music for practice and auditions, etc. This product replaced my old Sony tape recorder and I much prefer this new one. It is lightweight, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Sony TCM-210DV Is Not Usable, December 25, 2007
I researched many tape recorders before purchasing the Sony TCM-210DV. I needed it to take meeting minutes. I tried it out at two different locations and the hissing tape noise is so loud it overpowers the voices. Loud voices close by can be heard, but the noise is nerve-racking on playback. I tried two brands of tapes, thinking the one that came with the recorder might have been defective, but they had the same background hissing noise sound. Also, I thought I could use the cue for marking places while taping. Hmmmmm. I have a very old ordinary recorder that allows that function. Now, I don't know what to do. I have to take these minutes and am afraid to throw away more money on another bad recorder. I would like to get a refund, but don't know if it is possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT CASSETTE, August 2, 2007
For a sturdy full sized cassette recorder, look no further. This is a dependable and easy one to operate. I especially like the Double Record Time during seminars which allows your 90 minute tape to become like a 180 minute one and provide non-stop, all day recording without stopping during a speech to flip the tape over - possibly missing something important. I used it at a recent convention and it passed with flying colors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use cassette recorder, August 9, 2007
In an age where cassette recording has become obsolete, this one works very well for documenting and archiving interviews and conversations. I am archiving conversation and "memories" from my 96 year old dad and find that its size and ease of use work very well for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cassette Voice Recorder, July 28, 2007
This casssette recorder does seem to have a fair amount of background static, and yet it is much superior to what I last had. The sound quality, except for that background static, which is fairly easy to ignore, is excellent.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Sony TCM-210DV, July 7, 2007
This recorder has almost everything you could want in a small unit. It has all the features: Large speaker, double record time, variable playback for transcription, VOR, size, ease of use, and good price. The only thing that is needed to make this a superlative machine would be a better microphone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but sound is not as good as I had expected., March 22, 2007
The recorder operates well, but the hiss is more than I had expected. But perhaps others are as bad or worse.

    5-0 out of 5 stars I like it !!!, August 26, 2006

4-0 out of 5 stars Mine was just horrible, November 30, 2005
I really urge everyone to stay far away from this product if you value your cassettes. The one I purchased mangled the first cassette I put in (an irreplaceable one - how could I have been so silly as to put it in without testing the player?). In any case, this product really is a piece of junk. But then, you get what you pay for.

I do want to add that amazon came through for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for recording, September 14, 2005
I bought this for recording my son playing violin for his review, but the play back sound was terrible.
Not clear and not big enough.
I was very disappointed with this one.
I should have bought Sony one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Eater of tapes!, September 23, 2007
I bought several of these for use in my third grade classroom, both for listening to tapes and for kids to record their own books-on-tape. Like others have said, you get what you pay for with this product. Right away I lost three tapes to these machines. Plus, the volume control is extremely touchy... the slightest tap and it's WAY TOO LOUD, slightly tap it the other way and you can't hear a thing. As I haven't even tried to use them as voice recorders (I'm not trusting one more tape to these things!) I can't report on that aspect, but the volume control and tape ruining issues are more than bad enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for books on tape, September 8, 2007
I don't know why the other reviewers are so down on this item. I agree it's not wonderful for listening to music, but if you only listen to talk radio and books on tape, this machine does fine. It has never eaten any tapes I put in it. Can't beat the price. Why pay more for a boombox that has a CD or stereo sound, if you don't need it. These days, it's difficult to find any boombox that plays cassettes - I looked at lots of stores. I'm very happy with this purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars corny colby, March 23, 2009
i read all the options many times for the colby radios offered. the options state for the model i purchased that it has an external microphone and that you can record with it. the radio has no such option and you can only record from the radio. now iam stuck with it. it will cost me more to send it back than what the radio is worth IAM NOT HAPPY AT ALL

    3-0 out of 5 stars am/fm cassette, September 7, 2008
For the price, it is a decent value. the sound is fair. The buttons are kinda cheap. I have seen better made cassette players for the same money.

For the office it is fine. i still have alot of cassettes i like and it suits me fine for at work.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Coby cx 144, June 12, 2008
As of 6/11/08 am on my sixth one of these gems, three of which had to be returned to the Alco store where they were purchased. One would not work on house current. Another buzzed heavily on a.c., giving off an odor of melting plastic. The one exchanged 6/11? The cassette portion went dead-wouldnt rewind, play or record. When these work, the quality is okay, and it is hard to buy a unit like this without an obtrusive cd player. It is too bad these are so unreliable.

    1-0 out of 5 stars coby cx-144, March 2, 2008
Started chewing up my tapes within 1 week. It's hard to get a tape player any more. Shipping charges plus the cost of the product added up to wasted money--

    1-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment, May 9, 2007
I purchased this cassette player for my son, so we could listen to his books on tape in the car since I only have a CD player in my car. The sound quality is so poor, you can hardly understand the words. Also, it ate one of his tapes, and before that happened, it was difficult to get it to play at times. It is very cheap and poorly made and I threw it away. You get what you pay for, and if you're looking for a cassette player, don't get this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very, very disapointed, October 15, 2007
At one time "Sony" had a very good reputation for quality products.
This cassette recorder was anything but a quality product (mechanically,
everything worked just fine). Sound reproduction was abysmal -- far worse
than poor! A very loud "hissss" overrode the recording -- even when I used
an external microphone. I did not expect a 4track recorder, but what I
got should be an embarrassment to any manufacturer. Shame on you SONY!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped, January 3, 2007
I purchased this to do reading exercises with children at school. Even with the "Clear Voice Recording" feature, it fails to record well unless I use an outboard microphone.

Sony products have been good to me in the past, but this one does not perform as it should.
